Course description

The Master's Degree Course in Medical Biotechnology and Nanobiotechnology is part of the LM-9 Class of Master's Degrees in Medical, Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, has a duration of 2 years and does not provide for admission by means of a programmed number.
In order to obtain the final academic title, it is necessary to acquire at least 120 CFU (University Educational Credits).
The course is divided into two curricula:
- Biomedical curriculum. The course aims to provide specific knowledge in the fields of functional human anatomy, cell physiology, bioproduction, human molecular pathology and molecular epidemiology.
- Nanobiotechnology curriculum. It aims to provide specific knowledge in the fields of applied physiology, applications of physics in the diagnostic and therapeutic field, nanobiotechnology and chemical-physical and analytical technologies applied to medicine, biomaterial science and technology and tissue engineering.
1. Qualifications and admission requirements
a) a first-level degree from class L-2 Biotechnology (Italian Ministerial Decree No. 270/04) or class 1 Biotechnology (Italian Ministerial Decree No. 509/99) or, alternatively, a first-level degree from other classes, or another qualification obtained abroad, recognised as suitable under current legislation,
provided that the student has obtained a minimum number of CFUs in the scientific-disciplinary fields as detailed below:
1. MAT/01-MAT/09, FIS/01-FIS/08, INF/01, MED/01, SEC-S/01, SECSS-S/02: 10 CFU;
2. CHIM/01, CHIM/02, CHIM/03, CHIM/06: 10 CFU;
3. BIO/01, BIO/10, BIO/11, BIO/13, BIO/17, BIO/18, BIO/19: 10 CFU;
4. AGR/07, BIO/09, BIO/10, BIO/11, BIO/14, BIO/18, CHIM/06, CHIM/11, MED/04, MED/42: 24 CFU.
CFUs already counted in one area cannot be used for the same area in another area. An upper-intermediate knowledge of English is also required, which will be assessed during the admission interview.
b) Adequacy of the student's personal preparation in relation to the educational objectives of the course of study.
2. Means of testing individual preparation and subject matter
Initial preparation will be verified by an oral test, taken in the presence of a special Commission of the Teaching Council, which will assess the student's previous career, his or her basic academic knowledge relating to the fields of physics and chemistry and more advanced knowledge relating to the physiology, biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology of organisms and microorganisms.
The main occupational outlets envisaged by the Master's Degree Course in Medical Biotechnology and Nanobiotechnology are in the following fields (i) diagnostic through the management of molecular analysis technologies, bio- and nano-technologies applied to the medical, medico-legal, toxicological, reproductive and endocrinological fields; (ii) therapeutic, with particular regard to the development and testing of innovative pharmacological products (including gene therapy, cell therapy and nanobiotechnologies) to be applied to human pathologies or to the development of new strategies for large-scale bio-productions (including the bio-engineering of plants, yeasts and bacteria); (iii) biomedical and animal experimentation, with particular reference to the use of in vivo, in vitro and in silico models for understanding the pathogenesis of human diseases and developing new therapeutic tools, through the use of molecular methods and bioinformatics tools, cellular systems, bioartificial tissues and organs and the use of transgenic animals; iv.) production and design in connection with patents in the bio-health field. Another employment possibility is the placement of Medical Biotechnology and Nanobiotechnology graduates in centres specialising in assisted reproduction.
The experimental thesis consists of a written report on an original theoretical, experimental and technological application to the solution of a problem in the field of applied biotechnology and nanobiotechnology.
