Course description

The Degree Course in Biotechnology is part of the L-2 Class of Biotechnology Degrees, has a duration of 3 years and envisages programmed access. Admission to the Course is subject to passing a selective admission test.
The Degree Course aims to train graduates who are expected to possess an adequate mastery of tools and skills in the various fields of biotechnology disciplines for the production of goods and services and to enable them to continue their studies by addressing more specific aspects of biotechnology.
In order to obtain the final academic title, it is necessary to acquire at least 180 CFU (University Educational Credits).
Admission to the Degree Course in Biotechnology requires an upper secondary school diploma, or another qualification obtained abroad and recognised as suitable. Good knowledge of the basic notions of mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology, as well as adequate logical and comprehension skills, are required for admission and a fruitful integration in the educational pathway of the Degree Course. Admission to the degree course in Biotechnology is subject to a programmed number of enrolments.
Students must take an entrance test, the purpose of which is to verify that they possess the knowledge required for admission. The admission test normally takes place in the first ten days of September and consists of a test with multiple-choice questions (one of which is correct) covering basic scientific knowledge of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology based on upper secondary school syllabuses. At the end of the test, if applications for admission exceed the number of places available, a ranking will be drawn up for selection purposes. In the event of an unsatisfactory knowledge test, additional training obligations will be assigned to be met in the first year of the course.
The main occupational outlets envisaged by the degree course concern production and technical activities in the applied field of biotechnology such as laboratories (biomedical, industrial, agri-food and environmental, public and private research and service organisations) and services at the level of analysis, control and management; in all those public and private fields in which living organisms and their constituents have to be analysed, managed, used and modified; in laboratories for the production of bioactive molecules, drugs and cosmetics; in laboratories of health care companies for molecular diagnostics and cell therapy.
The Thesis consists of a written report on a topic agreed with the Supervisor. The report must be organised in the following parts: Introduction, Methods and Results, Bibliography. The Thesis work must be mainly of an experimental-applicative nature, and the final paper must clearly and punctually demonstrate the graduate student's disciplinary skills and critical, expository, written and synthetic abilities.
