Giovanni ZURLINI


Dr. Giovanni (Gianni) Zurlini is full Professor of Ecology at the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences and Technologies (DISTEBA) in the Faculty of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences at the University of Salento, Lecce (South Italy).


He directs the Landscape Ecology Laboratory (web site), working on the assessment of ecosystem health, goods and services, ecological risk assessment, and landscape ecology.


Dr. Giovanni Zurlini has been serving as president of the Council of Environmental Sciences courses at the University of Salento and is the proxy of University Rector for Environmental Sciences.


Prior to moving to Lecce in October 2000, he was director of the Center for Marine Science Investigations of the Italian Agency for Nuclear and Alternative Energy (ENEA) in La Spezia (north Italy), and served as senior research scientist at the National Research Council (CNR). He was Adjunct professor under contract at the Universities of Parma and Genoa.


Dr. Giovanni Zurlini received his Ph.D. from the University of Utrecht (NL) in 1980 in Mathematics and Natural Sciences, with a minor in Quantitative Ecology. He also has a Masters degree in Biology (Ecology) from the University of Parma.


He currently serves as Associate Editor of Ecological Indicators, Coordinating Editor of Landscape Ecology, Associate Editor of Ecological Processes, and in the editorial board of Ecological Complexity. He was awarded by the University of Smolensk (Russia) and by the Ministry of Education of Chile. He has served as counsellor of the Italian National Society of Ecology, and as scientific responsible for the environmental information system of the Map of Italian Nature National Project, promoted by the Ministry of Environment and the Department of Technical Services of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers. He has also served on the National Commission for Nature Protection. He is the Technical Expert for Italy of the CCSM/NATO pilot study on “Landscape sciences and landscape assessment”.

He is member of the stirring committee of the Ecosystem Services Partnership.
